Did Muhammad perform any miracles?

The Qur'an is explicit that Muhammad performed no supernatural, verifiable miracles and emphatically negates the idea of Muhammad performing physical feats such as raising the dead, healing the sick, opening physically blind eyes, and cleansing the lepers. Two verses will suffice. In Surat al-Bakara 2: 118 it is stated, “And they that know not say, 'Why does God not speak to us? Why does a sign ( ayatun ) not come to us?' So spoke those before them as these men say; their hearts are much alike. Yet We have made clear the signs ( bayyanna al-ayati ) unto a people who are sure.

In Surat al-Anam 6:109 we read, “ They have sworn (by Allah) the most earnest oaths if a sign ( ayatun ) comes to them they will believe in it. Say: 'Signs ( al-ayatu ) are only with God.' What will make you realize that, when it comes, they will not believe?

These highly elliptic verses have a fundamental bearing on the purport of the Qur'an as a whole. In many places the Qur'an stresses the fact that Muhammad, despite the claim that he is the greatest of apostles, was not empowered to perform miracles. That really puts Muhammad and Islam in trouble. This assertion does not come from Christians or Jews. It is the Qur'an accusing its prophet. The world of the spirit is the world of the supernatural. If you take miracles out the Biblical text, it becomes a flat novel. Islam dispels the Christian bombardment over the subject of miracles but sincerely and logically, a supernatural God, whose face I have never seen is hard enough to believe, let alone a person who claims to have been sent by this god, and has nothing to show for his sender! Muhammad and indeed Islam have an uphill task. History records that when Muhammad was challenged over these issues, he took up the sword to make them obey!

Was Muhammad a holy man or a sinner?

Every human being is born a sinner. The difference comes when one realizes they are sinners and accept a remedy for sin. The problem with Islam is there is no teaching concerning the elimination, cleansing, or washing away of sin! In fact if sin is to be understood as an abrogation of the law of God, we need to ask the Muslims where the basic Ten Commandments are written in the Qur'an. Where is it written you shall not kill? Or steal? Or you shall not covet your neighbour's property? Of course you have heard that thieves are amputated and limbs are cut. The Shariah Law, another concoction by Muslims, cannot be juxtaposed for the Qur'an! Everything Muslims believe should be in the Qur'an but wapi ?

And it is this and other deeply spiritual issues that separate the Christian and Muslim faiths. The human spirit is in constant search for a remedy for error. We wrong our peers, our leaders and even God! The heart simply cannot rest until there has been a declaration of freedom from sin. Islam does not guarantee the forgiveness of sin. In fact, Islam is a fatalistic faith. What Allah has predestined for you that is what you will get, no matter how you try.
